CATHERINE HOWARD (1522-1542) reine d’Angleterre

Cinquième femme du roi Henri VIII d’Angleterre qui l’épouse le 28 juillet 1540. Issue d’une grande famille aristrocratique, celle des Norfolk, très belle et plus que courtisée avant son mariage, Catherine Howard, devenue reine, ne semble pas s’être assagie et paraît avoir profité d’une absence prolongée du roi, au cours de l’été 1541, pour nouer des intrigues galantes, en particulier avec Derham. Informé à son retour de l’inconduite de sa femme, Henri VIII, après avoir fait exécuter deux de ses amants supposés, et l’avoir elle-même envoyée à la Tour, laissa au Parlement le soin de la condamner par la procédure expéditive de l’attainder qui exclut la nécessité d’une preuve ou de l’audition de témoins; elle fut exécutée le 12 février 1542.
